"Working in the field of mental health is my calling. Helping people with Anger Management is my mission."

Michael C. Martinez, LCPC, CAMSII

More than 25 years ago had my future self told me that I would have gone from working as a Foreman in construction to working with people struggling with mental health and problems with anger I would have bet my life's salary against it. How things can change. One day as I looked out through the window of my apartment to the grounds of my future alma mater I questioned my past academic failures that left me with a low self-opinion having dropped out of high school briefly as a teenager before just barely graduating a year behind my class. I decided in that moment that I would halt my career by replacing it with a new challenge to transform myself into one who confronts their fears head on by enrolling in school full time in the autumn semester. Such a drastic change in directions in the course of my life has led me to understand and believe that unimaginable and drastic change is possible. I have applied this accumulation of knowledge to my work with clients.

Development of my training program has been a multi decade journey that began well before I entered into the field of mental health. The journey was sparked by my own personal exposure to and experience of anger that left me seeking answers to how one is able to practice internal and external self-control. As a consequence, I became interested in others experiences with anger prompting my work in the field of mental health. I branched out with a focus on anger management as I noticed how serious the consequences could be. As well I often noted my client's needs were not well met by utilization of standard anger management techniques that by client feedback were not helpful. Thus, the process of building an anger management training intervention began.

From moment to moment, in life we are constantly determining who we are.

I came to this realization while studying theater as an undergraduate student. With every second there is an opportunity to make a choice that alters your course. The ability to recognize the seconds that matter most is the skill needed to address problems with anger. As feelings of anger will inevitably occur, one can prepare for that moment and increase their chances of significantly altering the typical outcome by way of disrupting the standard process. Focus on this aspect of treatment significantly increased my client's ability to decrease symptoms of anger.

While the Anger Management Intensive Intervention Training has evolved to include an array of approaches to helping people with anger, the approaches are consistent and utilize a 2-3 step structured and orderly process.

For so many anger is a self-imposed restricition on the experience of freedom. If it is time to learn a new way forward, perhaps the place to start is here.
